Glass Fusing is the technique of joining two or more pieces of glass by heat in a kiln. There are different glass fusing techniques. For example, “tack fusing” is a fusing technique in which the pieces of glass are heated until they are just hot enough to stick together and retain many of their own original characteristics or textures. In a “full fuse”, on the other hand, glass is heated until it becomes molten. Once fused, these glass pieces can then be slumped into a dish-shaped mold (“What Is Fusing?” Bullseye Glass Co.).
In this Kiln Fusing Glass Discovery experience, you’ll design a luminous 5.75” circular suncatcher using transparent and translucent glass. Explore layering, light flow, and color harmony as you build a composition that comes alive in the window. Each finished piece celebrates light, movement, and your unique design choices.
Projects are participant-designed with guidance from experienced instructors. You’ll be introduced to the tools, equipment, and safety practices used in kiln-formed glass, and learn how to cut and shape sheet glass. From there, you’ll arrange and layer your colors to create a one-of-a-kind composition ready for the kiln.
Kiln-forming offers a controlled alternative to working with molten glass in the hotshop, allowing for greater precision and detail. This experience moves at a relaxed pace and does not involve working with hot equipment during the session.
No experience required and all materials are provided.
2 hours in duration.
Age Requirements:
Minors ages 9-13 are allowed to participate with a parent/guardian who has also purchased a seat in the same class. (Our studio space cannot accommodate additional non-participating spectators, and youth under the age of 14 cannot attend alone for safety reasons.)
Minors ages 14-17 are allowed to work independently with parent’s permission (signed Minor Liability Release form on file).
Open to adults of any age
Class Size: Strictly limited to 8 individuals per session. Only individuals who have purchased a seat may attend. For safety reasons no additional non-participating spectators or guests may join you for your experience, since space and seating is limited. For individuals who need accommodations or have caretakers, reach out to us in advance so we can advise on how to best prepare for your time at the studio and modify our space if needed.
Waivers: All students and parents of minor students are required to read and sign a waiver, which indicates all of the safety risks involved with glassmaking and provides contact information.
Project Pickup: Due to the glass needing to be run through a kiln for 20+ hours, participants will not be able to leave with their projects the day-of. Completed pieces will be ready for pickup within 7 days following your reservation. Shipping can be arranged the day of your reservation with the front desk staff for a fee.
Health: It is the responsibility of the student to take care of themselves if they possess any health or cognitive conditions that could be affected by working in Foci MCGA’s facilities. It is the responsibility of the student to notify staff of such conditions, should it affect their health and impair regular studio operations.
