In this course, students will be introduced to a variety of glassblowing techniques that center around venetian methods with a modern sensibility. Students will receive in depth explanations about form, composition and construction while dealing with scale and proportion. Students will learn traditional and new methods of using cane and decorative color applications such as reticello, filigree.

This course will discuss how to work through ideas with the students current set of skills. Students will be encouraged to re-purpose their skills. In this class students will discover new methods of constructing objects in the hot shop using bits and working in a team.

Nate Cotterman


Clean, sleek and with purpose. In this weekend workshop, Cotterman will help the students with basic design of the utilitarian object. Students will gain an understanding of how to execute the idea, but more important how to develop the concept and object. Students will use a variety of methods to execute the designs in blown glass. This will include glass blowing, simple color application and ways of refining.

This is an entry-level course that will teach students how to make a small glass sculptural form from a solid block of glass using cold working techniques such as glass shaping, grinding, smoothing, polishing, engraving and gluing components with UV glue.

This is a split weekend intensive course, “Drop it like it’s Hot.” Students will be introduced to new techniques the first weekend and then have the week to work on these skills and techniques and develop questions to present to the instructor the following weekend.

In this course students will be introduced to how expand their repertoire of techniques and knowledge by fully using the studios at Foci MCGA. Student will discuss their ideas and then map the process. The class will move from the hot shop to cold shop to the kiln studio and back and forth.
