Join us at Foci for an educational insight into the creative process of visiting glass artist Sarah Gilbert.
Originally from Rochester, New York, Gilbert received her BFA from Rochester Institute of Technology in 2005. From 2006 to present, she has worked as a member of the Museum of Glass Hot Shop team in Tacoma, Washington, assisting artists from around the world in making their work in addition to developing her own practice. Gilbert primarily uses glass in her work. She creates imagery by using cameo engraving by pulling from a long history dating back to Roman times. Her constructed narratives begin with layers of glass color and as she carves, grinding away the surface as images emerge spurred by her reflections on her questions. Gilbert’s work has been featured recently in the exhibition, Young Glass, at Glasmuseet Ebeltoft in Denmark and Transparency: An LGBTQ+ Glass Art Exhibitionat the National Liberty Museum in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
